What you'll be doing
Hunter New England Mental Health is seeking medical officers with significant experience in emergency psychiatry to apply for this CMO position.  
 
Provision of a high quality and consistent medical services to patients of the Mater Mental Health Centre Psychiatry Emergency Service, coordination of clinical management of patients consistent with the plans of the Admitting Medical Officer and improvement in the continuity of care both within the PES and between the hospital and community. The PES includes both the Psychiatry Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the Psychiatry Emergency Care Centre (PECC). The majority of the CMO work would be within the PECC unit, performing acute psychiatric assessments for individuals presenting to hospitals accompanied by carers or family, emergency services, HNE Mental Health staff or on their own accord. The role also includes supervision of the assessments of resident medical officers and nursing staff, who may see patients and discuss them with you. A CMO level doctor is expected to work largely autonomously, however, consultation with a specialist psychiatrist is available by telephone 24 hours a day and often in person during business hours.  
The Career Medical Officer does not have admitting rights, however can be expected to exercise professional independence within the plans of the admitting doctors.  
This CMO role is designed to provide a base level of experienced medical cover in the Psychiatric Emergency Service when it is busiest. This is generally between midday and 8.30pm, thus applicants should be aware that these shift times would make up the majority of the work.
