What you'll be doing
The ISLHD Drug and Alcohol Service provides broad-based training and experience in Addiction Medicine and is a training site for the Chapter of Addiction Medicine  (FAChAM). The Addiction Medicine Unaccredited Trainee will, under supervision, provide medical assessment and access to treatment programs for Drug and Alcohol dependent people residing in the Illawarra (regional) and Shoalhaven (regional and rural) communities.  This position will target marginalised drug users who may have co-morbid medical or psychiatric conditions and a  wide range of training opportunities will be available including:
  • Core addiction specialty learning
  • Pain management
  • Substance use in pregnancy
  • Consultation and Liaison
  • Education and research
The successful applicant will gain exposure and experience in the following areas under appropriate supervision:
  • General Medical and Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Consultation Liaison.
  • Outpatient Clinic: in which the principle focus is on individuals receiving Hepatitis Treatment program.
  • Drug and Alcohol outpatient settings including assessment and ambulatory withdrawal management service including alcohol pharmacotherapy treatment.
  • Tailoring the patient’s withdrawal management treatment to one of the following options available; hospital, community residential or outpatient or supported home withdrawal management.
  • Prescribing maintenance pharmacotherapies for opiate dependent clients.
  • Involvement in research opportunities.
This position is suited to General Practice Trainees (with a special interest in addiction), BPT trainees who may wish to complete their FAChAM training, or an experienced Trainee seeking a new opportunity within the
Department. The clinical care will be delivered with consultation and inclusion of the multidisciplinary team within the
Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District D&A Service. The position is community based and provides service delivery across the District.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills including interpersonal skills
  3. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, think critically, problem solve and make sound clinical decisions
  4. Demonstrated understanding of evidence based practice and contribution to best practice models of care/principles
  5. Computer literacy
  6. Current unrestricted NSW Class C Drivers Licence
  7. A minimum of two (2) full years of postgraduate experience
